Sheng Tian Academy was unimaginably vast. By the time Wu Lang followed the route indicated by the guard and stood in front of the faculty office building, the bell for the lunch break had just rung.
After a cursory double-knock on the door, Wu Lang strode inside. The faculty building was a three-story composite structure. The ground floor served as a large open-plan office shared by the director and teachers of various subjects, with partitions between desks to provide privacy while allowing the director to supervise work. As a premier national institution, Sheng Tian Academy cultivated elite talents and tolerated no slacking off from its staff.
The second floor was dedicated to weekly faculty meetings, while the entrance to the third floor—the Chairman’s office—was located on the opposite side of the building.
Although morning classes had ended, several teachers remained behind to prepare lessons or organize materials. Wu Lang’s appearance didn’t draw much attention, except from Director Liu Xing, who had been waiting all morning and quickly came forward to greet her. Director Liu, despite being over forty, retained some of her youthful charm. Although, her image was stiffened by a modest dark professional suit and a tight bun that exposed her forehead.
“I am Wu Lang. Someone sent me here to get a job from Director Liu,” Wu Lang stated concisely, keeping a low profile by not mentioning Chairman Shao Xuanbang.
Liu Xing took in Wu Lang’s appearance: thick, long bangs that covered most of her face, a baggy light-blue tracksuit, and visible grime on the cuffs and shoulder. After looking her up and down three times, the director asked in disbelief, “You… are Wu Lang?”
“Mhm,” Wu Lang replied.
Liu Xing was conflicted; she had expected a brilliant young talent favored by the Chairman, not such an eccentric character. Steeling herself, she asked about her credentials: “What is your educational background?”
“Educational background?” Wu Lang repeated.
Assuming she was still studying, the Director rephrased: “Which institution did you graduate from?”
“Institution?”
“The place where you currently study and live,” Liu Xing clarified.
“Liuyun Street,” Wu Lang answered.
“Oh, Liuyun Street…wait, Liuyun Street?!” At the Director’s exclamation, the gaze of everyone in the room fell upon Wu Lang, including one particularly intrigued stare. Wu Lang nodded casually, seeing nothing wrong with her answer.
Trying to stay positive, the Director wondered if a rare talent might indeed emerge from such a chaotic place. She continued, “Do you have any prior experience in teaching or education?”
Wu Lang shook her head.
“Is there any specific field or subject you excel in?”
Combat, firearms, assassination… Though Wu Lang was proficient in these, they were clearly not the right answers for a school. Having never attended school herself, she pondered for a moment and said thoughtfully, “Something involving physical strength would be best, as long as I can eat in the cafeteria for free“.
