Summary
Ming Ruixi was a spoiled young lady—blessed with both princess syndrome and the status to match. Arrogant and overbearing, she looked down on everyone, but had a peculiar love for the jingling sound of the bell tied around her ankle.
Yu Xian was a dirt-poor orphan of few words who suffered from severe sound sensitivity (misophonia). Thanks to a sponsor’s recommendation, she was allowed to audit an oil painting class. Unable to afford supplies, she earned paint money by carrying Ming Ruixi’s bags, buying her boba, and waiting on her hand and foot. Yet, that period of her life was nothing short of agonizing.
After graduation, Yu Xian fled the haughty princess and the daily jingling bells that had driven her near to madness, opening a small inn on the outskirts of a Jiangnan water town.
One month after opening, someone she never could have expected arrived.
The once-gilded, untouchable young lady knocked on her door looking destitute. She claimed she was actually a fake heiress; the real daughter had been brought back by the Ming family, leaving her with nowhere to go. She asked if Yu Xian could take her in.
Yu Xian sized up her petite frame—complete with the bell still tied around her ankle—and let out an ambiguous scoff.
“I can. But on one condition.”
That rainy night, Yu Xian gave the bell in her hand a shake. Moments later, the once-haughty princess pushed open the door and walked in barefoot. Gritting her teeth, she cast aside all her arrogant pride and climbed onto Yu Xian’s lap…
—“I’ve suffered so much. Can’t you give me a little sweetness?”
